What Does a Day in the Life of a Personal Stylist Really Look Like?

When people hear the words personal stylist, they often picture shopping on Bond Street, sipping coffee in beautiful boutiques and putting together fabulous outfits all day.
While that can certainly be part of the job, the reality is much more varied—and, in my opinion, much more rewarding.
As a personal stylist, you're not just helping people choose clothes. You're building confidence, solving problems, running a business and changing the way people see themselves.
No two days are ever the same.
Here's what a typical day can look like.
8:00am – Planning the Day
Before meeting clients, most personal stylists spend time organising their schedule.
This might include:
Replying to client emails
Confirming appointments
Reviewing client questionnaires
Creating Pinterest inspiration boards
Preparing colour analysis tools or styling resources
A little preparation makes every client experience feel seamless and professional.
10:00am – Colour Analysis Session
One of the most exciting parts of the job is helping a client discover the colours that naturally enhance their complexion.
For many clients, it's the first time they've understood why certain colours make them look healthy, fresh and confident.
Watching someone's face light up when they discover their best colours never gets old.
12:00pm – Wardrobe Edit
Next comes the wardrobe.
This isn't about throwing everything away.
It's about helping clients understand:
what works
what doesn't
why certain pieces never get worn
what's missing
By the end of the session, clients usually have fewer clothes—but far more outfits.
2:00pm – Shopping With a Client
Shopping isn't about buying as much as possible.
It's about shopping with purpose.
A personal stylist knows exactly what the client needs before walking into a store.
That means:
less overwhelm
fewer impulse purchases
a wardrobe that works together
Clients often tell me they've saved far more money than they expected because they finally stop buying clothes they never wear.
4:30pm – Creating Outfit Combinations
After a shopping trip or wardrobe edit, many stylists spend time creating complete outfits.
This might involve photographing outfits, digitising wardrobes or building lookbooks that clients can refer back to whenever they get dressed.
This is where organisation meets creativity.
Running a Business Behind the Scenes
One thing people don't always realise is that personal styling is also running a business.
In fact, many stylists spend almost as much time growing their business as they do working with clients.
A typical week might include:
Marketing on social media
Filming YouTube videos
Writing blog posts
Networking with local businesses
Replying to enquiries
Updating your website
Creating courses or workshops
Managing finances and admin
These tasks are just as important as client work because they're what keep your business growing.
Every Day Is Different
One week might include:
Three wardrobe edits
Two shopping trips
A colour analysis workshop
Filming content for Instagram
Speaking at a corporate event
The following week could look completely different.
That variety is one of the reasons so many stylists love what they do.
The Most Rewarding Part
People often assume the best part of being a stylist is fashion.
For me, it's the transformation.
Watching someone stand taller, smile at themselves in the mirror and finally feel confident in what they're wearing is incredibly rewarding.
Style isn't just about clothes.
It's about helping someone feel like the very best version of themselves.
